With government encouragement, utility companies are looking for smart metering services for their residential and small business customers. To respond to these requirements, AMS needed to put together a solution that included data communications between each meter and the central data collection point.

Vodafone's existing GPRS mobile network was selected to transmit the metering data, thanks to its broad coverage and high reliability. Vodafone then developed a tailored service for AMS, which could ensure reliable data transmission without compromising other network traffic. It also put in place a billing module that delivers a consolidated invoice and has the flexibility to provide billing information in the formats required.
