AMS - Smart metering enabled by Vodafone

Case studies 01 January 2011

Vodafone worked closely with AMS to provide a bespoke technical solution and to develop new price plans that ensured the smart metering solution met the requirements of New Zealand’s energy retailers, consumers and distribution companies.

Business need

AMS is a leader in the deployment of smart metering and associated services in New Zealand. With government encouragement, utility companies are looking for smart metering services for their residential and small business customers. To respond to these requirements, AMS needed to put together a solution that included data communications between each meter and the central data collection point.

Vodafone has the ability to grasp the vision of what we were creating, and to form and a group within their organisation to help us achieve the required outcomes. Paul Atkins, Solutions Manager, Advanced Metering Services (AMS)

The solution

Vodafone's existing GPRS mobile network was selected to transmit the metering data, thanks to its broad coverage and high reliability. Vodafone then developed a tailored service for AMS, which could ensure reliable data transmission without compromising other network traffic. It also put in place a billing module that delivers a consolidated invoice and has the flexibility to provide billing information in the formats required.

Key customer benefits

  • By working closely with AMS and their other suppliers, Vodafone was able to provide a bespoke technical solution.
  • The requirements of the smart metering application were met, thanks to Vodafone's robust nationwide mobile data network.
  • Energy consumers benefit from an innovative price plan.
