Vodafone and Mic-O-Data help local councils to reduce costs and encourage sustainability with Smart Waste Management

Business need

Mic-O-Data is a Dutch technology company specialising in Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) solutions. TarDif, one of its products, tracks and secures 6,000 refuse collection points in public housing estates for 25 Dutch local authorities. The local authorities needed a solution to secure the collection points and track residential refuse collections throughout the country. For this to work effectively they need a secure data connection with nationwide coverage. Mic-O-Data also want a partner that could help facilitate international expansion.

When customers call us and we can't help them, we filter it through to Vodafone. They understand our systems, they know when to fix remotely or when we'll need a replacement. Tim Blomer, Director, Mic-O-Data

The solution

A Vodafone M2M SIM embedded in the TarDif transmits a regular status signal once a day. It sends an alert if the bin is getting full as well as other alerts such as the bin has not been closed properly. Not only can local authorities monitor who is using the facilities, and bill accordingly, they can also arrange for full bins to be emptied, or empty bins to be left. Embedded Vodafone M2M technology enables TarDif to operate nationwide and offers the scope to expand into Europe with one tariff. Vodafone provides additional helpdesk support to assist Mic-O-Data customers during the roll-out.

  • Studies show the solution can reduce CO2 levels by 18 per cent, thanks to more efficient refuse collection
