Energy and Utilities

Vodafone Energy Data Management (EDM)
Water companies face a significant challenge in their next asset management period

Privatisation and deregulation have opened up the market to intense competition, giving consumers and businesses more choices to meet their energy needs. Increasing scrutiny from investors, regulators and customers regarding social responsibility, sustainability and environmental matters have placed considerable pressure on utility providers to lower distribution costs, improve system reliability and transparency, conserve valuable finite natural resources and reduce carbon emissions.

There is also ongoing pressure on capital expenditure to renew or replace ageing networks and old power plants, and remove major bottlenecks in both transmission and generation. On top of this, distributed renewable generation and electric vehicle charging are beginning to make the supply and demand situation much more volatile and unpredictable.

M2M solutions enable cost-effective and automated information gathering. This drives significant operational efficiencies through simplification and automation of utilities’ core business processes. It also helps to reduce churn by delivering a better customer experience.

Smart grid and metering

Smart meters that enable two-way communication between the meter and the central system are making it possible to engage with consumers in new and innovative ways and to deliver a higher level of customer service than ever before. Smart metering is being used to facilitate a wide range of applications in the fields of remote meter reading, customer relationship management, demand-side management and value-added services.

Smart grid technology is helping energy companies to connect wirelessly to their grid assets, such as circuit breakers, transformers and other sub-station equipment. This wireless monitoring capability allows them to develop interactive utility networks that are more intelligent, resilient, reliable and self-balancing.

Smart homes, offices and commercial buildings

Smart meters and smart grids provide the intelligence to create smarter buildings that run more efficiently. Buildings in which a smart display will show in real-time, water, gas and electric consumption and also make it possible for consumer to control security, heating, lighting, intelligent devices such as air conditioning units and even the charging of an electric vehicle from a smartphone or tablet.

Our Code of Conduct

Reporting concerns

All employees and contractors have a duty to report any breaches of our Code of Conduct, which is known as our "Speak Up" policy. We have launched a global external reporting scheme which allows employees and contractors to report through a third party. This new process enables us to consolidate existing whistle blowing practice in local markets, increases visibility and ensures consistency of approach in responding to concerns raised from across the organisation. Concerns may be reported anonymously and the protection of innocent people is our priority at all times. People can identify themselves to our external partner using a PIN and receive feedback. Vodafone has a non-retaliation policy and will not take any action against anyone reporting a genuine concern, even if this is proven not to result in a breach of compliance.
