Vodafone achieves energy savings of up to 40% with Energy Data Management solution

During the Proof of Concept we immediately saw an energy cost reduction of up to 40% at one site. On average, we achieved a saving of 29% across all 200 sites that participated in the trial.

Business Need

Faced with rising global energy costs, and determined to fulfil its obligation to minimise its carbon footprint, Vodafone decided it needed a solution that would manage the way it consumes energy more proactively. To get the intelligence and global scale that it needed, Vodafone soon discovered it would need to build the solution itself.


Vodafone Energy Data Management is comprised mainly of data logging devices that sit alongside the main load meter that utilities use to determine overall building consumption. The data is gather together securely through Vodafone’s global wireless M2M network to an online portal. This easy to use online dashboard enables managers to monitor consumption and make decisions based on rich intelligence.


  • With the ability of how and where it’s wasting energy, Vodafone has been able to change processes, educate staff or upgrade facilities. As a result, some companies within the Vodafone Group have reduced energy bills by up to 40%
  • Armed with new intelligence, Vodafone can also reduce inaccurate estimates, challenge bills and negotiate better tariffs from its utility suppliers
  • Overall, EDM is driving Vodafone towards more long-term sustainable use of energy with lower carbon emissions — helping it to reduce its impact on the environment and hit government regulation target.

Our Code of Conduct

Reporting concerns

All employees and contractors have a duty to report any breaches of our Code of Conduct, which is known as our "Speak Up" policy. We have launched a global external reporting scheme which allows employees and contractors to report through a third party. This new process enables us to consolidate existing whistle blowing practice in local markets, increases visibility and ensures consistency of approach in responding to concerns raised from across the organisation. Concerns may be reported anonymously and the protection of innocent people is our priority at all times. People can identify themselves to our external partner using a PIN and receive feedback. Vodafone has a non-retaliation policy and will not take any action against anyone reporting a genuine concern, even if this is proven not to result in a breach of compliance.
